The middle stripe is a mix of potatoes and canned yams. The label said "sweet potatoes", but when I opened it up, I was thinking yams. When I did some digging I found out that I was wrong. What we call yams here in the US are typically orange sweet potatoes. argh! Will I still call them yams? yes. Only because that's what everybody calls them here.
Here are some links in case you're interested... Trust me it's not as exciting as swimming scallops.

Here is a photo story of Peepa's fur growth and color change. He started off as dark gray with almost no fur and eventually willed himself into being a blonde w/ "lots" of fur. Ok, not lots, but more.
2000. Not much fur at all.
2002. More fur. still very dark gray. Peepa will worm up to an unsuspecting sleeping person and contort them to fit his needs. I'm sure Andy's arm hurt after that nap.
2004. Looking very plush. Still has some smudges of gray on his sides.

I've been wanting to make that shepherdess pie. yours looks good. i love casseroles or generally putting things in the oven. yams vs sweet potatoes? i never really got the difference.
peepa's eyes are really freaky in the 2nd picture, but she looks really cute in the 3rd, very content.
yeah, that camera produced a lot of kitty cat red eye.
casseroles are nice simple things. Probably why I love mac 'n cheeze so much.
Huh. I've never seen a cat's fur change color! Very interesting!
I think that pie looks incredible. I, too, am so confused by yams and sweet potatoes. I still don't have it figured out!
hmm... what is this magical land of dino kale and stegosaurus scales you speak of lady????
Peeper is so adorable - you named your blog well!
Oh - your email subscriptions isn't working.
*don't hit me*
*ducks*
darn it. I think I fixed the email subscription. I'm testing it right now...
Your pie looks perfect! I've always been confused by the sweet potato/yam thing.
Peepa looks so furry in 2004! It looks like he just came out of the dryer!
i was contemplating making this recipe last week, but i was too hungry to assemble the whole thing. i love your striped of sweet potatoes down the middle.
i did an experiment with yams and sweet potatoes because i never knew which was which.

that's what i came up with. those tubers still annoy me to this day!!! haha
River - he does look like he was a fluffed up. Sort of fake looking.
Joanna - I hate the whole yam lie, though you get the prize for posting on it twice. I think I read those during mofo. I will just call them orange sweet potatoes. Maybe I will just call them "red garnets" because that is the type of sweet potato wrongly called yam that I like the best.
Hey there!
Jeni told me about your colour-changing Peepa. One of my cats, Spooky, changed this summer from black to brown with golden tips (except her head & shoulders, which are still black). Any idea what is causing the colour changes in our mutant moggies? It mystified two vets that I spoke to.
I have no idea why they change color. very odd. I like to think of them as rabbits that change their fur color with the seasons. Except the cats are really slow at it :)
